What do we do and who are we?

What sets us apart is our coordination model between hub networks at local, national, and international levels. Unlike scattered individual initiatives, we're building an interconnected system where local hubs can share resources, coordinate efforts, and amplify impact through strategic alignment. Our hub coordination model, which involves what we call “meta-hubs”, provides a process that can give greater impact to other civic initiatives because it builds on relational and developmental capacities.

We employ a separation of concerns model with specialized hub types, including those that are focused specifically on certain community needs such as civic engagement, sensemaking, inner awareness, trust building, meaning making, and material well-being. The idea is that each hub would have its own distinct functions while maintaining integration with others so as to collectively provide a foundation for bildung, which is a word that refers to holistic community development, self-cultivation, and transformative life-long learning. Software development is an important aspect of this.

Through connections with partner organizations that are developing technologies for privacy-preserving coordination and information-sharing, we have access to tools that could dramatically improve efficiency and enable secure and generative collaboration between hubs. We work to weave together online and in-person connections and our efforts emphasize face-to-face relationship building while leveraging digital coordination. We recognize that civic health challenges transcend borders. Our international focus involves partnering with established nonprofits to create and foster more local hubs in various cities, regions, and countries.

Why fund our work?

The funds raised will support the foundational infrastructure needed to launch and coordinate our hub network model, enabling us to establish sustainable local communities while building the systems for global coordination and replication.

Three Primary Funding Areas:

1. Hub Launch and Coordination Infrastructure ($20,000) - Establishing our first pilot hubs with startup resources including venue costs, initial programming materials, coordinator training, and the operational systems needed to test and refine our coordination model between central and local levels.

2. Leadership Development and Training Programs ($30,000) - Creating comprehensive training curricula for hub coordinators in our specialized areas (civic engagement, sensemaking, inner awareness, trust building, meaning making, and material well-being), including materials development, trainer compensation, and travel costs for in-person training sessions that model the relationship-building approach we advocate.

3. Partnership Development and International Outreach ($30,000) - Building relationships with established nonprofits globally to create local hubs, including travel for partnership meetings, translation of materials for international contexts, and pilot program support to demonstrate our model's effectiveness across different cultural settings. These investments will create a framework and network to enable rapid, sustainable scaling while maintaining the quality and coordination that is needed to have the maximal positive impact on communities.

How do we measure success?

The Civic Enlightenment Project employs the MetaImpact Framework developed by MetaIntegral, which provides a comprehensive, non-reductive approach to measuring impact that aligns with our holistic model of civic enlightenment.

We measure success across four dimensions using a mixed-methods approach that combines first-person (subjective), second-person (intersubjective), and third-person (objective) data. For each dimension, there are several methods that we will be using to regularly measure impact, as listed below:

• Clear Impact (Individual Performance) o Pre/post civic knowledge assessments and sensemaking skill evaluations

o Leadership competency 360-degree reviews from peers and community members o Behavioral observation metrics tracking quality of participation in dialogues and decision-making o Skills-based assessments measuring ability to facilitate constructive conversations and navigate conflict

• Deep Impact (Individual Experience) o Self-reported wellbeing and purpose surveys using validated psychological instruments o Participant reflection journals documenting inner development and meaning-making shifts

o Mindfulness and inner awareness assessments tracking contemplative practice integration o Exit interviews exploring personal transformation and sense of civic empowerment

• Wide Impact (Relational Networks) o Social network mapping showing changes in relationship density, diversity, and quality over time o Trust measurement surveys between different community groups and demographics o Qualitative interviews about improved community connection and collaborative capacity

o Documentation of new partnerships and cross-sector collaborations emerging from hub activities

• High Impact (Systems Change)

o Hub coordination efficiency metrics and information-sharing effectiveness between network nodes o Local civic participation rate changes in elections, town halls, and community initiatives o Policy influence tracking and institutional relationship development documentation

o Community resilience indicators measuring collective capacity to address local challenges.

Defining Success: We define success as the emergence of communities that can navigate complexity with both wisdom and compassion and where citizens have developed enhanced capacities for sensemaking and constructive dialogue (Clear + Deep Impact), where diverse groups have built authentic relationships and trust across difference (Wide Impact), and where local democratic institutions and civic infrastructure have become more resilient and effective (High Impact). Ultimate success means communities that can address their own challenges through coordinated collective intelligence while maintaining the inner awareness and relational foundation necessary for sustainable peace and democratic flourishing.

Where do we work?

The Civic Enlightenment Project operates as a coordinated network of local hubs that partners with existing nonprofits and civic initiatives rather than competing with them. Our core innovation is creating strategic coordination between autonomous local organizations while maintaining their specialized focus and community responsiveness.

How Our Network Functions: We use a separation of concerns model where each hub maintains its distinct focus (civic engagement, sensemaking, inner awareness, trust building, meaning making, and material well-being) while participating in coordinated resource sharing, joint training programs, and cross-hub collaboration on larger initiatives. Local hubs operate autonomously but connect through shared coordination systems and partnership networks. Coalition Impact: This creates multiplier effects wherein communities develop stronger sensemaking capabilities and civic leadership, every other civic initiative becomes more effective. We build the relational and developmental infrastructure that strengthens the entire civic health ecosystem, making us natural force-multipliers for other Civic Exchange organizations.

While The Civic Enlightenment Project operates internationally, we focus significantly on amplifying local and state initiatives throughout the United States through our hub coordination model. How We Amplify Local Initiatives: We partner with established local nonprofits to create specialized hubs that enhance their existing work through resource and knowledge sharing networks, leadership development programs, and cross-pollination opportunities that allow successful strategies to be adapted across regions. Our network approach enables state-wide coordination between local hubs for joint advocacy and shared resources while maintaining each community's autonomy and local focus. By building the coordination infrastructure that local initiatives need to thrive, we amplify their impact while ensuring they remain community-driven.

Why are we featured in Strengthening Civic Spaces? Tell me more!

Our work fits into all 4 of these focus areas:

Trusted Information and Institutions: Our partner sensemaking hubs directly address misinformation and weaponized news by teaching citizens critical thinking skills, information evaluation techniques, and how to distinguish credible sources from unreliable ones. In partnership with other organizations, we are helping to incubate such hubs in cities and regions where they are needed most. We strengthen institutional trust by building bridges between communities and civic institutions through improved dialogue and understanding.

Strengthening Civic Spaces: Our core mission centers on creating and coordinating physical and relational civic spaces through local hubs that bring diverse community members together for meaningful engagement. We specialize in building the social infrastructure that makes all other civic activities more effective.

Elections and Governance: Our civic engagement hubs focus on democratic participation, voter education, and governance literacy. We develop civic leadership across all sectors and create informed, engaged citizens who can participate constructively in democratic processes and hold institutions accountable.

Civic Tech and Measurement: Through partnerships with technology developers, we're building coordination tools for hub networks while pioneering comprehensive impact measurement using the MetaImpact Framework. Our approach to measuring civic health across multiple dimensions contributes to the broader civic tech ecosystem.
