Who we are?

Living Room Conversations is a non-profit organization founded in 2010 as a result of a transpartisan partnership focused on revitalizing civil discourse through conversation. Living Room Conversations offers an open-source format to facilitate structured conversations among people of differing views and backgrounds. Through these conversations we hope to increase understanding of various issues, build relationships, and pave the way for collaborative and inclusive problem-solving.

What do we do?

Why fund our work?

How do we measure success?

We track conversation downloads, trending conversation topics, and create case studies based on the communities we work with. We use SCIM for our Connecting Through Conversations course, are rolling it out for our DIY online conversation program, and require higher ed organizations using our resources to use SCIM as well. We are also in the initial stages of partnership with a lab at UPenn on language analyzation of our conversations.

Where do we work?

LRC works across the country supporting local libraries, civic groups, campuses, and faith communities. We write up case studies and amplify the work of groups holding Living Room Conversations and gather community leaders to network and learn from each other. As far as state initiatives, we partner with the Colorado State Library to get guides translated into Spanish and created a toolkit available to individual libraries throughout the state. In Utah, we give ongoing support to the Bolder Way Forward Coalition (improving the lives of women and girls in the state) with resources and grassroots organizing. We share what we're learning in our coalition work and outgoing comms.

Why are we featured in Strengthening Civic Spaces Focus Area?

In order to strengthen communities and understand the issues that face us, we need to be in better relationship with each other. Living Room Conversations has a simple, evidence based model that fosters trust and understanding. It is proven to create the conditions necessary for collaborative problem solving and builds a foundation of trust rooted in the humanization of one another. Civic spaces are most effective when everyone feels welcome and understand their role and responsibility-- dialogue plays a critical role in that effort.
