Who we are?
The Fulcrum is a nonpartisan, nonprofit digital news platform dedicated to democracy reform. We bring together insiders and outsiders—policymakers, practitioners, and the public—to inform, connect, and mobilize efforts to repair and strengthen American democracy.
What do we do?
We publish original reporting, solutions-focused analysis, and diverse opinions on electoral policy, voting rights, campaign finance, government ethics, and civic engagement. Our aim is to elevate the national conversation and spotlight workable, bipartisan reforms.
Why fund our work?
Your support ensures rigorous, independent journalism that holds power accountable, builds civic trust, and gives readers practical insights to participate in and improve democracy. Funders like the Hewlett Foundation, Bridge Alliance Education Fund, and Craig Newmark Philanthropies help us maintain editorial integrity and deepen our impact.
How do we measure success?
Our impact is measured two fold - one is by the number of journalism students and journalists that we are able to mentor in Solutions Journalism. The second is by our increasing impact - not just in views on our website but in pickups on other platforms and in print news opinion columns.
Where do we work?
Primarily online, we reach readers across the U.S., but our impact extends to public discourse and policymaking in Washington, state capitals, and local communities nationwide. We currently amplify local and state initiatives in our work, but we also have plans to initiate state bureaus when we have the funds.
Why are we featured in Trusted Information and Institutions?
We’re featured in Trusted Information and Institutions because we provide reliable, nonpartisan journalism that helps the public understand how democracy works—and how it can be improved. By offering fact-based reporting and elevating diverse voices in democracy reform, we strengthen civic trust, combat misinformation, and reinforce the role of media as a cornerstone of a healthy democracy.
